Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Carbon Monoxide (CO) detectors are devices that detect and alert against the presence of Carbon Monoxide gas to prevent poisoning. CO has no color or odor and is produced by incomplete combustion. Incomplete combustion happens when not enough oxygen is present for the fuel to react completely and produce carbon dioxide and water. This also happens when combustion is doused.

CO is also commonly known as the “silent killer” because it is almost undetectable without using some form of technology. High levels of CO are dangerous to humans depending on the levels of CO they are exposed to and for how long.
Carbon Monoxide detectors are designed to measure CO levels over time and sound an alarm when dangerous levels are detected. This gives people time to evacuate and properly ventilate the premises to bring down CO levels. Some systems may also be connected to central dispatch units so that emergency services can be on site if needed.
The basic function of a CO detector is to alert against life threatening CO levels. In order to ensure that the detector works the way it is meant to, it is always a wise idea to ask a professional electrical contractor to install it for you. CO detectors should be installed outside each bedroom as one alarm for a wide area is inadequate.
Detectors can be plugged in or can be installed by electricians high on the wall. Either way, make sure that no furniture, curtains etc. are covering the detectors. NEVER ignore a CO alarm. When you hear the sound of the alarm, press the reset button and call your emergency services immediately. Then move towards fresh air; outdoors or near an open window.
