Outdoor Lighting Safety
The main purpose of outdoor lighting is to illuminate the areas outside your home when the sun goes down, and for the safety and security of your family and guests. It also shows off your beautiful landscape during night time, which adds to the overall ambiance of your home. Here are some outdoor lighting safety tips to guide you:
• Wrap your connections with waterproof tape. You can ask professional electricians to assist you in getting these tapes.
• Purchase lights that are made for outdoor lighting so they will be able to withstand any kind of weather elements.
• Inspect your outdoor lighting on a regular basis. Change sockets that look too frayed, usually indicated by cracks and in some areas bent.
• Inspect your wires if they are not bare where you could actually see the inside of it that is often copper.
• Use only electrical equipment that has been tested and verified. One way of verifying if the lighting or electrical equipment you have bought has been tested safely is by looking at logos from UL and ETL laboratories in the packaging. If you don’t see any of these logos, then don’t use it.
• For electrical safety, plugs should be plugged into a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected outlet especially when used outside. Installation of the device helps prevent burns, electrical shock and some electrical fires.
• You should also check if there aren’t any loose wires that may produce sparks that can develop into a large fire.
• Keep all electrical connections elevated to keep it away from water on the ground.
• If you are not sure what you are doing or confused with the instructions provided by the manufacturer, have a certified electrician install your outdoor lighting.
