Range Hoods
Range hoods or hobs as they are also known are used to exhaust vapor and heat from the cooking area. These exhaust fans vent into the cabinet duct or back through the wall or can be blown back into the room through front facing vents. Most range hoods do not exceed 30” in width but of course there are larger models available.
Remember that range hoods have a very important part to play in your kitchen. Cooking always generates steam and heat and this adds to the humidity in your kitchen. Apart from being hot and uncomfortable, this heat and steam can create mold and mildew in your kitchen. This is where the range hood comes in and saves the day.
Now, like any of our kitchen appliances, even a range hood can have a bad day...
Range Hood Electrical Troubleshooting
In case of an electrical problem with the range hood, make sure that there is power getting to the range hood before you go into checking anything else. Check if the circuit breaker has tripped or blown a fuse and check if the wall socket is working properly.
If the range hood only has a fan switch and no light feature etc., then it won’t start if the fan switch is broken. Replacing the fan switch isn’t that complicated but it is always a good idea to call an electrician if you are not too sure how to do it yourself. It also won’t start if the fan motor is broken. The same procedure goes for the latter situation: calling a professional electrician may be the safe and more responsible thing to do.
