Cookers/Ovens/Ranges
Cookers, ovens and kitchen ranges come in all shapes and sizes. It's no strange thing to wonder whether these kitchen appliances will actually take over and tell you what you need to be cooking either. But, since technology is still a little away from that, us humans still have to make sure that these appliances run properly for us to enjoy their utility.
There is a vast array of possible electrical problems that can come up when it comes to cookers, ovens and kitchen ranges.
Let’s start with the basics; if nothing works or if it just works from time to time then:
• Check if the fuse has blown and tripped the circuit breaker
• Check the electrical outlet for power
• Make sure the power chord is plugged in properly and test it
• Don’t use extension chords for cookers or ovens
• Check the voltage at the outlet
If a single burner does not heat:
• Reset its element and see if it works then
• Test the heating element as it might have burnt out and test the element connectors as well
• Test the burner control switch
If a single burner only works off and on:
• Reset the element and see if it works
• Test the heating element and make sure it works and test the element connectors as well
• Test the burner control switch
If a single burner only works at high heat:
• Test the burner control switch
• You might also want to test the wiring for a short while
None of the burners work or if they do, they don’t reach full temperature:
• First of all, make sure the power chord is plugged in properly. You must also check the power outlet for current
• Check all the connections to and from the oven to its power supply
• You might also want to test the power chord for any issues
• Don’t use extension chords for ovens/cookers
• Another thing you must check is the voltage of the receptacle
The “ON” light does not work:
• Simply, the bulb may have burnt out
• Also check the connection of the control switch of the light
• You might also want to check the burner control switch
The oven does not heat:
• Start with the basics; check the timer and the clock settings
• Reset the element and test it and see if it works. You might also want to check the element connectors
• Test the oven temperature control
The oven does not maintain the set temperature:
• Reset the element and test it and see if it works. You might also want to check the element connectors.
• Check the thermometer bulb and test the oven temperature control. A simple recalibration of the oven temperature control may also work.
The oven temperature does not match what is indicated on the controls:
• A simple recalibration of the oven temperature control is what is needed
The broiler does not work:
• Restart and test the element and the connectors
• Check the oven temperature controls and the oven selector control
The convection feature does not work:
• First, check the oven selector control
• Check if there are any obstructions to the oven fan and check the fan motor also
The clock does not work:
• Check all the connections to and from the clock
The oven light does not work:
• The bulb most probably needs replacing. But before you do so, you might want to check the switch first
The self cleaning feature of the oven does not work:
• The door needs to be closed properly so make sure the oven door closes and the latch has securely fallen into place
• Test the element and the temperature controls
• Also, check the oven selector control
The oven door does not close properly:
• The door might just need adjusting or the door springs might need adjusting or replacing
• Check if the door seal gasket is good or needs replacing
The exterior of the oven gets very hot:
• Inspect the door seal gasket because when it is bad or broken, the heat tends to come out and heat up the outside of the oven
As with any other electrical appliance, for problems you are not familiar with, or in situations in which you are not too sure what would be the best way to handle the malfunction at hand, call a professional electrician for help.
