Why Do Lights Flicker?
A flickering light bulb can be a very irritating experience. If there is a fluctuation in voltage, the problem can be considered simple, but otherwise it can be a serious electrical problem and must be looked into.
A loose connection between the bulb and the socket is the most common cause of a blinking light. The cause may be traced to twisted wires leading to occasional disconnection and causing the flickering. It is easy to fix the wire. Also, check whether the bulb is fitted perfectly into the socket. Sometimes the bulb may be faulty or old, and by replacing it the problem can be solved.
There is a contact tab between the socket and the bulb, so if the piece of brass on the socket has got bent, the contact cannot be established. You can straighten out the brass piece using pliers and it may be possible that the problem gets solved when you plug in the bulb.
If none of the simple solutions solve the blinking light, the wiring must have been affected. It is best to call an electrician to check the electrical wires attached to the bulb, and if there are any breaks or worn areas, he can replace them for you. Follow all electrical safety precautions and the proper procedure.
The fault may lie in the socket or the electrical outlet. Check the socket by trying out another electrical appliance on the same outlet. If it is faulty, it is better to get it checked and repaired by professional electricians.
A dim and fluctuating electric supply may be the cause for flickering light bulbs. If the flow is not constant, the bulb will be flashing on and off. Ask your electrician to check whether you are receiving full power, otherwise rewiring is the only solution.
